CENSUS 2000 DESCRIPTION OF CENSUS MAPS
Description of Census 2000 Maps
Census Tract Outline Maps and County Block Maps are organized by county. Each county has one or more tract maps and multiple block maps. For both tracts and blocks there will be an index map labeled 000_Index if there is more than one map available. These index maps will show the county boundaries and the boundaries of any places within the county. It also will have an overlay of a grid of squares. Each square represents the area covered by one of the maps for that county. Using this grid, you can determine which map or maps cover the area of interest. At the center of each square you will find a map sheet number - this number corresponds to the "Map Sheet Number" shown in the selected set of maps for that county from the main query display. Go back to the main display and view the map sheet number of the areas you are interested in. The more populated areas are covered by "Inset Maps" which are identified by alpha-numeric labels (examples: A03, C09, G14, etc.).
Census County Divisions Maps (CCDs) are a subdivision of a county that is a relatively permanent statistical area established cooperatively by the Census Bureau and the local government auhorities.
Census Place Maps show places which are defined as a concentration of population either legally bound as an incorportated place indentified by the Census Bureau as a census designated place.
Tribal Block Maps show the boundaries, names, and codes for American Indian/Alaska Native/Hawaiian Homeland areas, counties, county subdivisions, places, census tracts and blocks. Both federal and state reservations may cross the boundaries of counties, county subdivisions, and places.
Tribal Census Tract Outline Maps show the boundaries and numbers of the American Indian tribal census tracts as well as the named features underlying those boundaries for American Indian reservations and off-reservation trust lands. American Indian tribal census tracts are small, relatively permanent statistical subdivisions of a federally recognized American Indian reservation/off-reservation trust land. The difference, April 7, 2004, is in the hierarchical presentation of the data.
Urban Cluster Outline Maps show the boundaries, names and codes of urban clusters, as well as the named features underlying the boundaries.
Urbanized Area Outline Maps show the boundaries, names and codes of urbanized areas, as well as the named features underlying the boundaries.
